[ insert name of organisation] is sponsoring a cross-sector initiative to promote best practice and establish an industry standard in operational property asset management.

The project is backed by key Government and industry bodies, including the Institute of Asset Management, Royal Institute of British Architects, British Institute of Facilities Management, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Office of Government Commerce and others.

Plans for this initiative were first publicised at a project event held at Somerset House in July 2005, when Sir Michael Lyons gave the proposals his full support. Following several rounds of consultation these plans were formally signed off by the organisations backing the project in March this year.

The industry standard will be produced through a voluntary, open process of drafting and peer review involving a wide range of property stakeholders. The property sector has a tradition of setting its own standards; to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln's definition of democracy, this is a project 'of the industry, by the industry, for the industry'. A principal aim of this initiative is to increase the perceived relevance of property to business.

An innovative feature of the project is the use of a collaborative software application, known as a 'wiki', to assist the development of the standard. Wikis allow users to add, edit, delete or re-organise information using only a normal web browser. Open source collaboration can increase the amount and range of inputs compare to a conventional standards writing process, and reduce the time and cost of production. A well-known example of a quality information good produced in this way is the online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia. The wiki used for this project is called PropertiWiki.
